Hi all,
Firstly welcome to my new blog. What I am looking to do is take a news/sports story that has taken my notice and to give you my spin on it.
Being a big football supporter, I thought that I would start with the sexiest remarks aimed towards Sian Massey, the female linesman, sorry woman, at the Liverpool v Wolves game.
The following comments were made when Richard Keys and Andy Gray thought that their microphones were turned off.
“Somebody better get down there and explain offside to her,” said Keys.
“Can you believe that? A female linesman. Women don’t know the offside rule,” said Gray.
Keys replied “Course they don’t. I can guarantee you there will be a big one today. Kenny (Dalglish) will go potty. This isn’t the first time, is it? Didn’t we have one before?” And then he added “The game’s gone mad. Did you hear charming [West Ham vice-chairwoman] Karen Brady this morning complaining about sexism? Do me a favour, love.”
Now, I am all for equality and if they are getting the decision right, where’s the harm? But where does it stop, are we going to be seeing Men and Women lined up together to play the sport, are the FA going to change the rules from the amount of home grown talent to the amount of Women you have to have in your squad? I grant you, this sounds a bit far fetched, but with the way the world is turning more and more politically correct, why not?
The big question to me is, would there be the same amount of stigma on this if it was a man running the line at a women’s game and some women made the comments about the man? I doubt it!
Now what really peeves me about all this is that all this fuss has been made about their comments and it seems that everyone apart from the actual person it was aimed at is complaining!! I’m not saying that Keys and Gray were right with what they said and were only caught out due to the schoolboy error of not realising their microphones were on, but really, what’s all the fuss about? It’s not like they did a Ron Atkinson and made racist comments; they were just two people who made a comment off camera, in jest! Millions of people up and down the country do this on a daily basis.
Her job will always be harder as the mans game has always been run by men, but providing that she doesn’t do a Stuart Attwell, I don't see the harm and award a goal when it should have been a goal kick, in fact, it sounds like she had done a better job than Stuart Attwell, so is it really all that bad?
Thanks for reading
